2024年に96歳で逝去したアニメーション作家・漫画家、久里洋二。その類稀なるユーモアセンスは、今なお私たちに尽きることのない笑いと示唆を与え続けています。本展では、その多彩な創作活動の一端を、アクリル画、シルクスクリーン、漫画カットなどを通してご紹介いたします。久里洋二は福井県今立郡鯖江町（現・鯖江市）に生まれ、戦後間もない混乱期の中で創作の道を志しました。旧制福井県立武生中学校在学中に終戦を迎え、1947年には京都市美術学校に合格するも、家庭の事情により進学を断念。以後、郷里で様々な職業に従事しながら創作活動を続けました。
若き日の久里は漫画家・横山泰三に強い憧れを抱き、作品投稿を続けるも採用には至りませんでしたが、それでも創作への情熱を失うことはありませんでした。1950年、ついに父の反対を押し切って上京し、横山を訪ねるため鎌倉に近い藤沢へ移住。この地で漫画家・利根義雄や演出家・丸尾長顕らと出会い、創作の基盤を築いていきます。その後、横須賀税務署勤務を経て、1952年には共同通信社画信室に勤務。写真や漫画などの画像素材を地方紙へ配信する業務に携わりながら、作家としての活動を本格化させていきました。
また、久里の作品は国内にとどまらず海外でも高く評価され、とりわけヨーロッパにおいては、その風刺性と実験的な表現が早くから注目を集め、多くの映画祭や芸術シーンで紹介されてきました。現在においてもなお、その独創的な作品世界は国境を越えて多くの人々を魅了し続けています。
鎌倉は久里にとって青春時代を過ごした特別な場所でもあります。税務署勤務時代には、自転車で鎌倉の街を巡っていたというエピソードも残されており、本展はその原点ともいえる土地での開催となります。

Yoji Kuri, an animation filmmaker and manga artist who passed away in 2024 at the age of 96, continues to inspire us with his unparalleled sense of humor, offering endless laughter and insight. This exhibition introduces a portion of his diverse creative output through acrylic paintings, silkscreen prints, manga illustrations, and more.
Kuri was born in Sabae Town (present-day Sabae City), Imadate District,
Fukui Prefecture. In the chaotic period immediately following World War
II, he resolved to pursue a creative path. He experienced the end of the
war while attending the former Fukui Prefectural Takefu Middle School.
In 1947, he was accepted into the Kyoto Municipal School of Fine Arts,
but was forced to give up enrollment due to family circumstances. Thereafter,
he continued his creative activities in his hometown while working various
jobs.
As a young man, Kuri greatly admired manga artist Taizo Yokoyama and repeatedly
submitted his work, though none were accepted. Nevertheless, he never lost
his passion for creation. In 1950, he defied his father's opposition and
moved to Tokyo, settling in Fujisawa near Kamakura in order to visit Yokoyama.
There, he met manga artist Yoshio Tone and director Nagaaki Maruo, laying
the foundation for his creative career. After working at the Yokosuka Tax
Office, he joined the Kyodo News Photo Department in 1952. While distributing
visual materials such as photographs and manga to regional newspapers,
he began to pursue his work as an artist in earnest. Kuri’s works gained
recognition not only in Japan but also internationally. In particular,
in Europe, his satirical and experimental expressions attracted early attention
and were featured in numerous film festivals and artistic venues. Even
today, his uniquely original world of expression continues to captivate
audiences across borders. Kamakura holds special significance for Kuri
as the place where he spent his youth. There are stories of him riding
his bicycle through the streets of Kamakura during his time working at
the tax office. This exhibition is thus held in a location that can be
considered the very origin of his artistic journey. |

切り立った鋭い描線と、不条理とエロスに満ちた無尽蔵のアイデアで、日本のインディペンデント・アニメーションの可能性を切り拓いた久里洋二。1960ー70年代に前衛的な音楽家（武満徹、一柳慧、冨田勲）や詩人（谷川俊太郎）など異分野の才能とともに創作し、世界中の作り手たちに衝撃を与えた国際アニメーション映画祭での受賞作をまとめて上映する。
